Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) When Accessing Canvas
Overview
Canvas uses Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), which means your existing Microsoft MFA methods are also used when signing in to Canvas. If you already use MFA to access Outlook, Microsoft Teams, or other Microsoft 365 services, no additional setup is required.
This additional security measure helps protect your Troy University account and university resources by requiring a second form of identity verification after entering your TrojanPass credentials.
What to Expect
When signing in to Canvas, you may be prompted to verify your identity after entering your TrojanPass credentials.
The available verification methods depend on the authentication options you have already configured in Microsoft.
You may see a screen similar to the one below.

The available options may include:
- Text message
- Microsoft Authenticator notification
- Verification code from the Microsoft Authenticator app
- Phone call
- Other approved authentication methods configured on your account
Select the method you would like to use to complete the sign-in process.
Entering Your Verification Code
If you choose Text Message, Microsoft will send a verification code to your registered mobile phone.
Enter the code into the Verification Code field and click Sign In.

If you selected another authentication method, follow the on-screen instructions to complete verification.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to enroll in MFA for Canvas?
No.
Canvas uses the same Microsoft Multi-Factor Authentication settings that are already associated with your Troy University account.
If you are already using MFA for Microsoft services, no additional enrollment is necessary.
Will I be prompted every time I sign in?
Possibly.
Microsoft determines when additional verification is required based on several factors, including:
- The device you are using
- Your web browser
- Your sign-in location
- Previous sign-in activity
- Microsoft's security policies
Some users may be prompted more frequently than others.
