Overview
TROY University's Annual Cybersecurity Awareness Training helps employees recognize cybersecurity threats, protect university resources, and maintain compliance with institutional security requirements.
This article answers common questions about training requirements, accessing assigned training, completing required modules, obtaining completion certificates, and receiving assistance.
Training Requirements
Who must complete the training?
All full-time faculty and staff members are required to complete the Annual Cybersecurity Awareness Training.
Part-time employees and student workers with elevated system access may also be required to complete the training.
When does the training begin?
The Annual Cybersecurity Awareness Training campaign launches annually on October 1 in conjunction with Cybersecurity Awareness Month.
What is the deadline?
All required training must be completed by October 31.
Is the training mandatory?
Yes.
Annual Cybersecurity Awareness Training is required to maintain compliance with university cybersecurity requirements and continued access to university technology resources.
Failure to complete the training by the deadline will result in the loss of access to university credentials and technology resources.
Accessing Your Training
How will I receive the training?
Eligible users may receive an email notification when the Annual Cybersecurity Awareness Training campaign launches.
The notification includes:
- Training requirements
- Compliance deadline information
- Instructions for accessing the training portal
If you believe you should have received access to the training but did not receive a notification, submit a request through the TROY Online Training Portal Support.
I am a full-time employee but did not receive an email. What should I do?
Not every employee receives a training invitation email.
If you believe you should have access to the training, submit a request through the TROY Online Training Portal Support. Information Technology will review your account and provide assistance as needed.
I logged in to the training portal, but I do not see my assigned training. What should I do?
In many cases, assigned training is available but may be displayed under a different training status tab.
After signing in to the SANS training portal, locate the My Training section.
Available tabs include:
- Not Started
- In Progress
- Overdue
- Completed
The active tab is identified by the Cardinal-colored line beneath the tab name.
Step 1: Check the Not Started Tab
Verify that the Not Started tab is selected.
If assigned training has not been started, it should appear here.
Figure 1. Not Started tab within the My Training section.
If no training appears in the Not Started tab, proceed to the In Progress tab.
Step 2: Check the In Progress Tab
Users who have previously opened their training may find it under In Progress instead of Not Started.
Select the In Progress tab and look for the assigned TROY Cybersecurity Awareness Training learning path.

Additional Troubleshooting
If you do not see assigned training:
- Select See All Assigned Courses & Learning Paths.
- Verify that no text has been entered in the search box.
- Review the Overdue tab.
- Review the Completed tab.
- Refresh the page and sign in again.
If you still cannot locate your training assignment, submit a request through the TROY Online Training Portal Support.
About the Knowledge PreCheck
What is the Knowledge PreCheck?
The SANS Knowledge PreCheck measures your cybersecurity awareness before training begins.
Based on your results, the system automatically creates a personalized learning path and assigns training only in areas where additional learning is needed.
Benefits of the Knowledge PreCheck
- Reduced overall training time
- Personalized learning path
- Ability to test out of topics you already understand
- More efficient use of your time
How long does the training take?
Completion time varies based on your Knowledge PreCheck results.
Users who demonstrate proficiency in specific cybersecurity topics may receive fewer assigned modules and complete the training more quickly than users assigned the full learning path.
Completing the Training
Can I stop and continue later?
Yes.
Your progress is automatically saved, allowing you to complete the training across multiple sessions.
Note: If you choose to complete the Knowledge PreCheck, all PreCheck questions should be completed during the same session to ensure results are recorded properly.
Which web browser should I use?
For the best experience, use one of the following supported browsers:
- Google Chrome
- Mozilla Firefox
It is recommended that you use the most current browser version available.
I completed the training but did not receive a completion notification. What should I do?
If you did not receive a completion notification, the training platform has not yet marked your training assignment as complete.
This usually occurs when one or more assigned training modules have not been fully completed.
Step 1: Verify All Assigned Modules Are Complete
Log in to the training portal and review your assigned training modules.
Every assigned module must display a green Completed status.
Figure 3. Example of completed and incomplete training modules.
Training is not considered complete until every assigned module displays a green Completed status.
Step 2: Complete and Properly Exit Any Module That Is Not Marked Completed
If a module does not display the green Completed label:
- Open the module.
- Review all remaining content.
- Complete any unanswered questions or assessments.
- Continue through the entire module until you reach the completion screen.
- When prompted, select Return to the home screen.
Figure 4. Module completion screen.
The completion screen should display a message similar to:
Congratulations! You have finished the module. Return to the home screen to continue.
Select Return to the home screen before leaving the module.
Important: Do not close the browser tab or select Exit before returning to the home screen. Returning to the home screen allows the training platform to properly update your completion status and record your progress.
- Return to the training dashboard.
- Verify that the module now displays a green Completed status.
Repeat these steps for every assigned module that is not marked Completed.
Still Not Showing Completed?
If a module still does not display a green Completed status:
- Reopen the module.
- Verify all content pages have been viewed.
- Verify all knowledge checks or assessment questions have been answered.
- Progress to the final completion screen again.
- Select Return to the home screen and verify the module status updates.
If all assigned modules display a green Completed status and you still have not received a completion notification, submit a request through the TROY Online Training Portal Support.
I completed the training, but I am still receiving reminder emails. Why?
If you continue to receive Annual Cybersecurity Awareness Training reminder emails, the training platform still identifies your account as non-compliant.
Reminder emails are generated based on an individual user's training status. If you continue to receive reminder emails, the training platform still identifies your account as non-compliant and one or more assigned training requirements remain incomplete.
What should I do?
Review the previous section, "I completed the training but did not receive a completion notification. What should I do?", and verify that:
- Every assigned training module displays a green Completed status.
- All assessments and questions have been completed.
- You have progressed to the final screen of each assigned module.
- You selected Return to the home screen after completing each module.
- Any required completion actions have been recorded by the training platform.
Important
Receiving reminder emails after completing most of the training generally indicates that at least one assigned module, learning path, assessment, or completion requirement remains incomplete.
If all assigned training displays a green Completed status and you continue receiving reminder emails, submit a request through the TROY Online Training Portal Support for assistance.

How do I obtain my completion certificate?
After successfully completing all assigned training requirements, your completion certificate will be available within the training portal.
