Overview
Admin By Request is a tool to provide temporary Administrator rights to your computer. WIth it, you will have the ability to install approved applications or make necessary changes to your computer without administrator credentials of your own.
Before using, always check whether the application you'd like to install is available in the Software Center.
Benefits
- No IT ticket or helpdesk call needed
- Some applications may be pre-approved
- Commonly installed applications can be added to the pre-approved list
Prompted by ABR vs Prompted by UAC
Admin by request has two main functions. The "Run As Admin" feature, and the "Request Administrator Session" feature. These two functions allow for the ability to handle any situation you may need regarding admin rights.
ABR's run as admin feature will only intercept when you are attempting to elevate a Single Application. This can come into play in two situations.
- If you download an installer and attempt to run it, you will likely be met with the ABR Run as Admin prompt
- If you find an application you'd like to elevate, use the "Run as Administrator" option when opening the Application.
ABR is exceptional at elevating a single application process, however, there may be times when you are not prompted by it. Instead, the typical windows UAC prompt will show.
Situations in which the UAC prompt may show are listed below:
- Trying to modify settings that are classed as "Advanced System Settings".
- Running an EXE directly from a browser download prompt.
- Running an installer in user mode that subsequently triggers another MSI or EXE requiring elevated privileges.
- Modifying an item that exists on the Public Desktop (e.g. a shortcut)
- Using File Explorer to copy a file to a location that requires elevated privileges.
When you are met with the UAC prompt, you may request an Administrator session. More on that is detailed in a later section titled 'Administrator Session'.
