When I am in the Finder and I try to type a name for a new folder or rename an existing folder or file, the keyboard does not seem to work. However, I can still type in applications such as Word or Firefox. How do I fix this?

We have experienced this problem in OS X Tiger and Leopard. At this time a cause is not known. The only solution is to relaunch the Finder. This can be done by restarting the computer or by pressing Option, Command, and Esc at the same time to open the Force Quit Applications window and then selecting the Finder and pressing the Relaunch button.
